purson prog rock

Is this another sign of a resurgence in progressive rock from the UK?
Purson have really got this early 70's prog band sound off better than anyone at the moment. There is distinct familiarity about the sound. A particular type of prog rock sound though and one that would have echoed around the halls of the University circuit in those early 70's. It lies somewhere between the voice of lead singer/guitarist Rosalie Cunningham and the riffs and themes she and the band are laying down to the songs. The clear rising voice of Rosalie has a definite quality similarly heard in Curved Air's Sonja Kristina and Jefferson Airplane's Grace Slick and it's a rock voice not very often heard in today's bands. But there is also one obvious difference to those rock gals of the past in that she is also directing the guitar riffs to accompany her voice on several numbers.
The guys in the band are tight and faithful to the source of that 70's style although when you've got a Rosalie Cunningham fronting the show it's going to take a little time for the new audience to get to know them. It's easy to see where the eyes will be focused at first but hopefully we'll find there is a Paul Kantner or Marty Balin behind those songs.
Purson have had a debut album, suitably on cd and vinyl 'The Circle & the Blue Door' out on London's independent > Rise Above Records which fans of doom and sludge metal will be familiar. Which might be seen as an unusual label for the bands prog rock but they support the labels identity and have preferred their direction rather than attempts at major label acceptance. A good move for all you'd think.
A small hitch on the horizon would appear to be another band out there with the same name. They are a black metal band from Mexico which makes that tricky once the band leaves the country. The way that usually works is one of them is hit with a lawsuit or, and is probably the more likely, one of them has a hit and takes the name by default. A bolt on addition to the name of either band might resolve the problem but bands get snarky about this stuff. Let's hope it works out for them all.
Anyway here's the UK prog rockers live with 'Two's and Ones' .. you will hear more of them make no mistake.
