The G3 tour has just finished its final leg of this years tour in South America. Its a concept thought up and organised by guitarist Joe Satriani, featuring him alongside 2 other world class guitarists. Steve Vai regularly appears on the tour along with other guitarists including John Petrucci and Eric Johnson.

Alongside Satriani, this years lineup consisted of combinations of Steve Vai, Steve Morse, Steve Lukather and John Petrucci. The tour travelled worldwide to South America, Europe and Australia/New Zealand and is definitely worth seeing live should you ever get the chance.

There have been a number of live recording of various shows, released on both CD and DVD, but here is G3 live in Tokyo in 2005 playing Smoke on the Water with Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and John Petrucci.

joe satriani

Joe Satriani is currently touring with the rock supergroup Chickenfoot with their second album. As well as Satriani the band consists of former Van Halen members Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony, and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith.

Along with his own material, Satriani's career has included working with many other artists. Most notable are the G3 concerts where Satriani features with two other guitarists playing a mixture of their own work, cover songs, and on some occasions original music written for the concerts. Satriani also briefly toured as the guitarist for Deep Purple in the early 90's and was eventually asked to join the band but had to refuse due to contract commitments with Sony.

It is also notable that early in Satriani's music career he was also a guitar tutor to many students who would become famous in their own right. The most famous of his students included Steve Vai, Kirk Hammett of Metallica and Alex Skolnick of Testament.
