arthur lee and love - 1970

By 1970 the original members of Love had fallen apart by internal squabbling and failed power play. The groups previous two albums Forever Changes and DeCapo had found some success in the States but in the UK Love's following was considerable and Arthur Lee had become almost a legendary figure by the end of the 1960's despite the band never having appeared live in the country. Fans of the group had only ever heard stories of the group and their enigmatic front mans lives in California which had only served to keep them even less accessible. The music itself had seemed to breath the very atmosphere of the place and what they imagined "The Castle" (see post), the groups communal home, was really like in the late 60's psychedelic haze.

So by 1970 with Lee now surrounded by a new group of Gary Rowles (guitars), Frank Fayad (bass) and George Suranovich (drums) the band had more of a blues rock approach to that of the garage folk psychedelia previously and had released 2 albums in 1969 and a third in 1970 with even a guest appearance by Lee's friend, Jimi Hendrix.
But still with no sign of the group ever wanting to leave the surrounds of Los Angeles let alone the country. There is no film of the original 60's group but amazingly they obviously did travel in 1970 and played some concerts in Europe.
Here then is this rare and only footage of Love taken in 1970. In Copenhagen !
