mars red sky

We've posted a few stoner psychedelic bands on these pages and at the moment a lot of the front line in the genre have come from Europe. There's been some mighty jamming from Germany in particular, those groups have really taken the extended improvising between the lead players into some impressive areas.
The Swedish bands have a sound which is classy, and superbly produced. Scandinavia has a diverse guitar sound in general. There are one or two from the UK, but the style is not abundant, more straight ahead metal is the usual choice. Even Russia and the Slovak countries, although not given to stoner lifestyle do power up guitars with a joyous freedom that rolls out in their psychedelia. The US of course have got the lions share out there and they come in all shapes and sizes. But the French, well we don't hear that much about their bands. And then out of the blue smoke comes one.
The Obelisk blog, and by the way you should drop in on JJ's intensive coverage in the US if you like hard rock metal, anyway JJ has just got hold of the latest European tour dates for French stoner band Mars Red Sky. A really good sound they have as well with a different approach again to the other countries, there really is a difference between them all, almost like their musical language changes as the genre is interpreted.
Mars Red Sky are set for a new album release shortly although at present still at the mixing stage, judging by their last works it's going to be well worth the wait.
Try this track, “Clean White Hands”. They have a sound which is more carefully arranged than the jamming style of the German bands. They're not afraid of light and shade in the song/instrumentation, a little like the Swedish produce only more laid back, and you might say typically French there is a more impassioned feel about the song. It's very good stuff. A brilliant bit of poster artwork too.
Mars Red Sky are on bandcamp if you'd like some further exploring.
