psychedelic showdown

Speed Guru vs Plastic Crimewave
Comic book and 7” single with Acid Mothers Temple’s Makoto Kawabata and Chicago based illustrator, writer and musician Steve Krakow.

"In the works for almost 3 years, early '14 will see the release of the ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE vs. PLASTIC CRIMEWAVE comic book/7in record set on prophase music & film! Yes, plotted/written by Makoto Kawabata and Sir Crimewave and drawn by Plastic Crimewave, this cataclysmic tale of aliens, magic, and psychedelia is actually somewhat autobiographical, and packaged just like the 70s 'Power' book/record sets of his youth".

the case of kurt cobain's death

On Saturday (5th April) it was the 20th year anniversary of the death of Kurt Cobain.
Since that fateful day of his suicide there's been a steady drip of the inevitable conspiracy theories that are de rigeur following a young man's death with such a high public profile. There are the usual fans, along with those that revel in such stories, living out a sort of self diagnosed analysis of the events and just like similar cases of early deaths in hugely popular artists , Hendrix, Morrison, Monroe etc etc, the list is long, the conclusion is of course that the great one was cold bloodily murdered by an assailant so devious and conspiratorial they had to be involved in an artists shady or subversive background. It all makes very good headlines, it all makes for irresistible gossip spreading.. "I told you so" remarks.
But rather unusually, in Kurt's case, a rather unprecedented step was taken there or about on March 20th by the investigating Police Force at the time in Seattle to reopen the original files of the rock icons suicide in anticipation of the upcoming 20th anniversary.
"Seattle Police Department Cold Case Detective Mike Ciesynski reviewed the case file in anticipation of media inquiries about Cobain’s death, and the many conspiracy theories surrounding the case."
And rather surprisingly Ciesynski did find something. There were four rolls of photos from the incident scene, never developed by the investigator. They'd originally assumed Kurt had committed suicide and “and already had Polaroids and photos from the medical examiner,” so it's assumed these extra rolls of film were unnecessary.
Although you would have thought even if it was just curiosity they'd have checked the rolls out anyway. Still, that's the way things turned out back in 1994.

What was even more surprising though, given that it was the fuzz actually doing this, they released a selection of these photographs on their website, which is here if you want to see more.
We've picked some (below) from this selection.
Most of them were of the "scene" and place where Kurt committed the deed. His garage. Not the usual sort of garage we might recognise though, well not for most of us, this looked more like an extension to the house with adjoining doors, nicely fitted benches but pretty sparse, and with good lighting. Maybe a lot of garages are like that in the States come to think of it.
Anyway along with photos of the scene, there were also close up shots of Kurt's dope stash, a small box with his doings in it, and a little more chillingly and very saddening is a close up of his arm, obviously he's laying prone on the floor, and on his arm is a hospital or medical tag.
For all his troubles Kurt had recently left a rehab centre. Kurt was very troubled you see, and always had been. There had been a period when the young child Kurt had been happy but it had long gone.
It's like his rise to rock stardom was to have been no more than a distraction during a couple of the early years with his music before his troubled mind returned.
One of the pictures is of the actual "suicide note". It had been pinned through with a Biro or pen and stuck in a plant pot or some such. Which looks a pretty definitive statement right there,.. you can imagine him right pissed off thinking "there you go.. stick that".
A fragile mind would have likely placed it in his pocket for it to be found later. A sort of private internalising.
This is only conjecture of course but there's a definite tetchy undercurrent of displeasure in him when he also writes as part of that note -

"Thank you all from the pit of my burning, nauseous stomach for your letters and concern during the past years. I'm too much of an erratic, moody baby! I don't have the passion anymore, and so remember, it's better to burn out than to fade away."
But it also seems this note is the basis of much of the conspiracy.

"Grant believes that it was actually a letter written by Cobain announcing his intent to leave Courtney Love, Seattle, and the music business. Grant believes that the few lines at the very bottom of the note, separate from the rest of it, are the only parts that sound like a suicide note. He believes that those lines are written in a style that varies from the rest of the letter, suggesting that they were written by someone other than Cobain".
'Grant' being a private detective working for Courtney Love.
Actually, its quite true in that if you look at the note you'll see the bottom few lines are addressed to Courtney and their child and are written in a larger printed style, added like an after thought and more haphazard than the rest of the note, which is long and almost squeezed onto the paper, like he didn't want this to end up with PTO at the bottom in finishing up his diatribe of dissatisfaction. He adds -
"Frances and Courtney, I'll be at your alter.
Please keep going Courtney, for Frances
. For her life, which will be so much happier without me.
I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU!"

It's also fare to say not once does he mention he ever wants to leave Courtney and the family home. Plus the fact he ends with "I love you" hardly confirms that rumour.
Nah, what you got here is a guy who thoughtfully and intensely puts together his case of dissatisfaction with just about everything around him, finishes, gets himself numbed up and ready to make a final bit of checking.. "have I got the gun, is it loaded, OK anything else?.. Yeah got to tell her (Courtney) it's not her but me".
The rest of the note if you care to look is much more an impersonal address to the rest of the world, his fans and things in general pertaining to the music business.
There's a website that shows the note text, a scan of the note, and his death certificate here.
Oh yes and there's just one final observation in the Police photographs. Since when has it been good practice for Officer O'Malley (we'll call him that) to be posing with a sublime smile on his gob at the incident scene. You can just imagine it at the time , "Yeah take one of me by this bit of the rock stars nutty sculpture".
(Kurt had obviously made a sculpture from a wooden stool with more than 4 legs (ha), on it a note reads "NOW YOU HAVE MANY LEGS TO STAND ON".)
And likewise below that there's the nicely posed casualness of Plain Clothes Officer Dipstick. "Yeah now take one of me just going about my usual day business.. pretty cool eh".
No wonder they didn't develop these mugs.
Final words go to modern day Cold Case Detective Mike Ciesynski “It’s a suicide. This is a closed case.”
It's doubtful the conspiracy theorists will believe that! They rarely do.

scout niblett

English born Emma Lousie Niblett or better known as "Scout" Niblett, (she derived the name from Harper Lee's 1960 novel 'To Kill a Mockingbird'), has one mean delivery. It's minmal and highly effective. Many of her songs consisting merely of vocals accompanied by either drums or guitar, which she primarily plays herself.
"Her newest record "It’s Up to Emma" is powerful and manic. Spartan drum and guitar parts serve to accent raw vocals that sound backed-in-a-corner furious. “Gun” is one of the best vengeful spurned-woman songs I’ve heard,"
Amy Seidenwurm. BOING BOING

She's half way into a tour of the States at the moment. This track of hers is an absolute killer. Understated and expressive she delivers a blow that says you do not double deal with this woman.
Here's the track "Gun". Part of the excellent Sound It Out free song download at Soundcloud. Click 'Download' on the widget below and get your MP3.

alice in chains

Grunge band Alice in Chains are due to release their new album at the end of this month, the second with (new) vocalist William DuVall. The album title, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here, is according to guitarist Jerry Cantrell about politics and religion which he has stated are " two things you never want to get into a conversation or argument about".

The band are already touring and doing gigs with the new material, which is receiving positive reviews but sounds like exactly what you expect, and want to hear from Alice in Chains.

Here is Alice in Chains performing Hollow, the first single off the new album at the Jimmy Kimmel Live show last month. Note the LSMS reference on the bass drum, is most likely in recognition to original vocalist Layne Staley who died in April 2002 and original bassist Mike Starr who died in March 2011.

nirvana reunion

Last nights Concert for Hurricane Sandy Relief at The Madison Square Garden 12.12.12. found Nirvana's Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear having a reunion with perpetrator from an old band that did actually make *the first grunge recording*.
Fanatics of Nirvana will be outraged and disapproving but the rest of us are wondering what the hell is that square bodied resonator guitar thing called. It sure makes a sweet raucous noise.
*That would be Helter Skelter off the White Album

screaming trees

Another post for 90's grunge band Screaming Trees. This track, Troubled Times, comes from the bands sixth and most popular album Sweet Oblivion. The album also featured a song on the film Singles, which is about the grunge scene in Seattle in the 90's and includes material and performances by many other of times most popular grunge bands.

Although a live video of this great track cant easily be found, its definitely worth a mention. So here is Troubled Times straight from the album

soundgarden

Soundgarden released their much anticipated sixth album this week, the first new album in 16 years.

Soundgarden rose to fame in the 1990's as one of the most important bands of the grunge era that came out of Seattle along with Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Nirvana. The bands success peaked around 1994 after the release of their Superunknown album, from which one of their most recognisable songs, Black Hole Sun, is taken. The writing and touring for the following album proved to be a difficult time for the band due to musical differences, the pressure of the music business and touring becoming too tedious. In 1997 Soundgarden decided to call it a day, announcing the split on 9th April.

After Soundgarden's split, in 2001 Chris Cornell went on to form the famed band Audioslave with ex-members of Rage Against the Machine releasing three albums with the band.

Soundgarden's new album, King Animal, is a true return to form for the band with its firm grunge roots but still sounding like a fresh new album. They played the opening track from the album on last weeks Later... with Jools Holland, which is here for those of you that missed it!

eddie vedder

Eddie Vedder, most famous for being the frontman of grunge band Pearl Jam, has over the years become one of the icons of alternative rock.

Vedder worked on Chris Cornell's Temple of the Dog album in 1990 providing vocals and backing vocals. The album was a tribute to Mother Love Bone singer Andrew Wood, who died in March 1990 of a heroin overdose.

1990 was also the year that Pearl Jam was formed by guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament who auditioned Vedder for the vocalist role and within a week he had joined the band. Pearl Jam's first album Ten was an instant success, and Pearl Jam would go on to become one of the grunge era's most successful bands.

Vedder has contributed with many other artists including other grunge artists, mainstream pop musicians and even playing live on stage with Johnny Depp. Although most known for his vocals, he is a talented musician who along with playing the guitar, plays the ukulele, harmonica, accordian and many others.

In 2007 Eddie Vedder released his first solo album, the soundtrack to the film Into the Wild about the American adventurer Christopher McCandless who died in the wilderness aged 24. The album is a folk/rock album and features a cover of the song Hard Sun written by the Canadian musician Gordon Peterson who performed under then name Indio.

Here is Eddie Vedder's cover of Hard Sun performed live, featured on his Water on the Road DVD

jerry cantrell

Guitarist Jerry Cantrell is most famous for being one of the founding members and the guitarist and main songwriter with grunge band Alice in Chains. However, Cantrell has collaborated with many other well known artists but has also released two solo records of his own, Boggy Depot and Degradation Trip.

During the phase of writing Degradation trip and recording the demos, Cantrell placed himself in a state of isolation in a house in the Cascade Mountains in North America. The album deals with a lot of issues that Cantrell stated weren't easy to get across verbally. He stated in his biography (in a passage taken from the Roadrunner Records website) "In '98, I locked myself in my house, went out of my mind, and wrote 25 songs. I rarely bathed during that period of writing; I sent out for food; I didn't really venture out of my house in three or four months. It was a hell of an experience. The album is an overview of birth to now. . . Boggy Depot is like kindergarten compared to this."

As a result of Cantrell's writing process he originally had 25 songs to go on the album. Roadrunner records, who released the album in June 2002, had the number of songs reduced to 14 to go on the album but in later 2002 released all 25 songs under the title Degradation Trip Volumes 1 & 2.

Here is the fantastic track Gone, from volume 1 of Degradation Trip

screaming trees

Formed in the mid 80's the Screaming Trees are one of the bands known as the Godfathers of Grunge. They were one of the most successful underground bands of the grunge movement in the 90's along with other bands such as Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and Nirvana.
The band split in 2000 after releasing seven full albums. At the time of their split they had been working on writing a further album which was never released. However, in August 2011 these tracks were finally released as the album Last Words: The Final Recordings.
Here is a great live performance of the track Dime Western from the last album the bands released before breaking up, featuring Josh Homme during his brief time as rhythm guitarist with the band
