prepare yourself for the retinal circus

OK people you better buckle up for this one. And we mean grab hold of something tight when you play this video it might just be one of those occasions when you hear or see something you've never seen or heard before. But first a bit of background.

In November 2011, after performing a series of special Devin Townsend Project shows, Devin Townsend revealed his plan to perform a one-off concert in London, England, that would cover his musical career from mid-1990s up to that point. Townsend stated that he wanted to create a "more than musical" show which included a storyline, multiple performers and special effects. Later he said that the concert would be recorded for future release. *[Wikipedia]

Over the years, rock and particularly heavy rock and metal have dabbled with themes and concepts set in operatic, orchestral or choral forms with varying results, some successful and some frankly ridiculous. So when anyone does decide to take on a really big musical concept they also inherit a big risk. Preparation is everything. Belief in the project is all. And you better have some balls.

*The concert was one of the most prepared Devin Townsend shows ever, with over a year of pre-production, and it was recorded in high definition with a higher budget and a more professional approach to production than the previous live release, 'By a Thread'. 5000 people saw the sold out performance, and the concert was also streamed live.

The show was recorded at The Roundhouse, London in September. The DVD has just been released in Europe and it'll be coming to get you in the States on October 29
So now all that's left is to say the lead singer is Anneke van Giersbergen (former lead singer and guitarist of the Dutch progressive/alternative rock band The Gathering), and you might like to turn this up a bit.
