It seems barely a month goes by without another of the 1960's rock generation leaving us. Today, news was posted of the death of Allen Lanier, the guitarist and keyboard player for Blue Öyster Cult.
Allen was a founding member of the band which began back in 1967 as 'Soft White Underbelly' and then BOC in 1972. He was a mainstay of the band throughout with only a 2 year break between 1985 and 87 until he retired from touring in 2006, reuniting with the band on-stage for a 40th anniversary show in New York, November 2012.
Blue Oyster Cult, along with the likes of Black Sabbath and Blue Cheer, created the psychedelia-tinged metal with its long jams and heavy riffs that were to influence groups for decades after, with BOC having their biggest hit in 1976 with "Don't Fear The Reaper" from the 'Agents of Fortune' album.
Here's "Buck's Boogie" from their first live album 'On Your Feet or on Your Knees', released in early 1975
