This is Mississippi Hill Country blues from the northern part of the state, which along with RL Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, Fred McDowell and T-Model Ford played.
Up until the mid-'80s, Burnside was primarily a farmer and fisherman and like other unheard blues men was discovered in the late '60s via folklorists and young blues fans. Although he had done short tours, amazingly it wasn't until the late '80s that he was invited to perform at several European blues festivals and in the 1990's began hitting full stride with further tours and recordings.
His last album was in 2005, that same year he suffered a heart attack and never fully recovered passing away in Memphis, age 79.
It's rather a pity that Dave Stewart didn't pursue what he'd learned from the great man as by now we'd have heard a rather different musical direction for at least some of his career. Although maybe that's still to come.
The song is "Long Haired Doney".
