For those that have never seen Dudley Moore & Peter Cook's film 'Bedazzled' a brief outline of this remarkable and funny film is probably needed to explain the following clip.
Basically Dudley Moore as loser Stanley Moon has sold his soul to the devil aka George Spiggott (Peter Cook) in return for 7 wishes in the hope his life takes on a new and exciting transformation.
The wishes are granted yet always thwarted by the devil taking a literal interpretation in a "be careful what you wish for" tale.
In this scene Stanley has used one wish to become a pop star in the hope of achieving his dream of being idolised by clamoring girls and one in particular. A top of the pops scene follows in which Stanley, as a full-on love pleading solo singer finds himself immediately usurped by the very next pop sensation, superbly characterised by Cook. Stanley's final trampling beneath the fans bewitched by the next pop craze is completed by a prearranged "raspberry" to signal the end of his misguided wish.
It's an observation so accurate of pop music's fickleness that after over 50 years it loses none of it's irony and brilliant vox pop satire.
Created by the two comedians at their peak with a masterful soundtrack composed by Dudley Moore it stands as one of the UK's finest homegrown films of the sixties.
